17th Amendment

The US Constitution took years and several conventions to construct before the final version was signed in Philadelphia on September 17, 1787. Even then it took adding the first ten amendments before it was fully ratified by all the states in 1791.

Did the 17th Amendment upset that balance. And given the movement to do away with the Elector College, what does that foretell?
